The Most Extreme Weather Conditions

We all know that weather can get pretty wild sometimes and that it is not always in accordance with our wishes. Global warming, pollution, and and similar effects caused by human could increase chance for some extreme weather conditions.

Could you imagine how it would be to live a single minute on a 57,8°C (136 °F) temperature? Could you imagine that there was hailstorm with hailstones as big as 17,8 cm (7.0 in) diameter and 47.6 cm (18.75 in) circumference? Extreme weather happen almost anywhere and we hope none of us will be there when it happens.

1. Highest Air Temperature Ever Recorded:
It would have been a bad time to be in Al ‘Aziziyah, Libya on September 13, 1922. The temperature high of the day was recorded at 57.8 °C (136 °F), making it the highest air temperature ever recorded. Al ‘Aziziyah is located near the Sahara desert which is one reason it was so hot. Despite this record, there have been claims of higher temperatures in other places during a phenomenon known as a “heat burst” where winds rapidly increase thetemperature and lower the moisture in the air. The most extreme of these is the supposed 87 °C (188 °F) during a heat burst in Abadan, Iran during June of 1967. The event has not been confirmed and therefore is not accepted as the world record. As of now Death Valley, California a close second for hottestrecorded temperature with a high of 56.7 °C (134 °F) on July 10, 1913.

2. Fastest Temperature Rise:
At 7:30 a.m. on January 22, 1943, in Spearfish, South Dakota, the temperature was -20°C (-4°F) when a chinook (wind that goes downhill) began to blow very quickly. Within two minutes the temperature had risen to +7°C (+45°F). This 27°C (49°F) rise in temperature is the fastest temperature rise ever recorded. The strange weather patterns continued and an hour and a half later the wind stopped and the temperature dropped from 12°C (54°F) to -20°C (-4°F), a total drop of 32°C (58°F) in only 27 minutes.

3. Coldest Temperature on Earth:
The Vostok Station is a Russian research facility located on the southern “pole of cold” in Antarctica. The poles of cold are the points on the earth with the lowestrecorded air temperatures, and although there are multiple locations that are considered “poles of cold” in the northern hemisphere, Vostok is undeniably the coldest part of Antarctica. To give you some perspective, the average winter climate is ?65 °C (?85 °F) and about ?30 °C (?25 °F) in the summer. On July 21, 1983, thetemperature at the Vostok Station dropped to ?89.2 °C (?128.6 °F), and this is the coldest temperature ever recorded on earth. In addition to the cold, the climate in the area is incredibly unfit for humans for many reasons. There is essentially no moisturein the air, the average wind speed is 11 mph (Up to 60 mph), there is a lack of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air, and the area has a polar night that lasts three months. The facility is used for research such as ice core drilling and the study of magnetic fields.

4. Fastest Temperature Drop:
South Dakota has some strange weather due to the Chinooks, and Rapid City (about 45 min from Spearfish) holds the record for the fastest temperature drop ever recorded. On January 22, 1943, the same day as the strange weather in Spearfish above, the temperature plummeted 27°C (47°F) in 5 minutes from 16°C (60°F) to -11°C (13°F), and this set the record for fastest drop in temperature ever recorded.

5. Largest Snowflake:
On January 28, 1887, a rancher at Fort Keogh, Montana discovered a snowflake that was 38 centimeters (15 in) in diameter, but unfortunately because of the time period there is no picture of the actual flake. Although the circumstances seem fishy, he had witnesses and the flake is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest snowflake ever recorded.

6. Most Rain in 24 Hours:
Between 15 and 16 March 1952, Cilaos at the center of the Island Réunion received 1,869.9 mm (73.6 in) of rainfall, and this is the greatest 24-hour precipitation total everrecorded on earth. The island also holds the record for most rainfall in 72 hours, 3,929 mm (154.7 in) at Commerson’s Crater in March, 2007.

7. Highest Snowfall in North America:
Between July 1, 1998 and June 30, 1999, 29.0 meters, (1140 in) of snow fell on Mount Baker which is located in Washington State, United State, When the Mt. Baker Ski Area reported the figure it was investigated by the National Climate Extremes Committee and they voted unanimously to accept the number. The previous record was 1,122 inches on Mt. Rainer (150 miles south of Mt. Baker) in 1971. The Pacific Northwest has large quantities of snowfall in the mountains and that is for a few reasons. Seattle has a well-earned reputation for raining often, and when all of the moisture-filled clouds from the Pacific hit the mountains they begin to dump their precipitation on the slopes. Seattle is at a low elevation so it is frequently too warm for snow, but it is often below freezing at elevations higher than 4,000 feet which leads to the high snowfall in the mountains.

8. Largest Hailstone:
On June 22, 2003 a large thunderstorm moved across south-central Nebraska, and after a hailstorm local residents in Aurora found an extremely large hailstone and quickly put it in a freezer to keep it from melting. It was examined by the National Climate Extremes Committee who measured it as being 17.8 cm (7.0 in) diameter and 47.6 cm (18.75 in)circumference . The previous record was found in Coffeyville, Kansas, on September 3, 1970, and had a diameter of 5.7 (14.5 centimeters) inches as well as acircumference of 17.5 inches (44.5 centimeters) . It is not officially the heaviest hailstone ever recorded , but it may have been before it hit a gutter and had time to melt before between the time it fell and was frozen. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) reports that hail can fall as fast as 100 miles (160 kilometers) per hour, and more destructive hailstorms cause one billion dollars in damage to property and crops annually. At this time the record-holding hailstone is stored at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado.

9. Fastest Wind:
On May 3, 1999, tornadoes formed in Oklahoma and began destroying homes across the state. At about 7:00 Pm a DOW (Doppler On Wheels pictured above)recorded a three second gust of wind that was traveling at 512 km/h (318 mph), and the speed far surpassed the previous record of 460 km/h (286 mph) in a tornado by Red Rock, Oklahoma, on April 26, 1991.
In 1971 Ted Fujita of the University of Chicago introduced a method of categorizing tornadoes called the Fujita Scale. In the rating system he set out parameters to classify tornadoes F0 through F5, but in his notes he also described a theoretical F6 tornado which would have a higher wind-speed than a F5 tornado and he was almost certain could not exist. The highest windspeed for a F5 is 318 mph, so if the winds had been 1 mph faster it would have been the first tornado ever to be classified as an F6.

10. Largest and Most Severe Tornado Outbreak:
From April 3 to April 4, 1974, in a period of 18 hours, 148 tornadoes occurred across the 13 central US states and Ontario, Canada. The event came to be known as the “Super Outbreak” and it had devastating effects. 24 of the tornadoes were classified on the Fujita Scale as F4’s, and six were F5’s, more F5’s than have been reported in any other year. There were also more significant tornadoes during that 24 hours than any other entire week on record. It extensively damaged approximately 900 square miles (1,440 square kilometers) along a total combined path length of 2,600 miles (4,160 km). The outbreak of tornadoes was caused by an extreme low-pressure system that moved across the US, and it created $3.5 billion in damages. More than three hundred people were killed during the 18 hours, and 5,484 people were injured.

Armless Girl Gets A Pilot License

Jessica Cox, 25, a girl born without arms, stands inside an aircraft. The girl from Tucson, Arizona got the Sport Pilot certificate lately and became the first pilot licensed to fly using only her feet.
Jessica Cox of Tucson was born withoput arms, but that has only stopped her from doing one thing: using the word "can't". Her latest flight into the seemingly impossible is becoming the first pilot licensed to fly using only her feet. With one foot manning the controls and the other delicately guiding the steering column, Cox, 25, soared to achieve a Sport Pilot Certificate. Her certificate qualifies her to fly a light-sport aircraft to altitudes of 10,000 feet.
"She's a good pilot. She's rock solid," said Parrish Traweek, 42, the flying instructor at San Manuel's Ray Blair Airpot. Parrish Traweek runs PC Aircraft Maintenance and Flight Services and has trained many pilots, some of whom didn't come close to Cox's abilities.
"When she came up here driving a car," Traweek recalled, "I knew she'd have no problem flying a plane." Doctors never learned why she was born without arms, but she figured out early on that she didn't want to use prosthetic devices.

Pedestrian Bridge, Texas

This beautiful arched bridge in Lake Austin was a private build by Miro Rivera Architects and is used to connect the client's main house to the smaller guest house on the other side of the water. The idea was to make the bridge seem as natural as possible within its surroundings and to do this they made the decking and reed-like hand rails as imperfect as possible. The result is a bridge that looks extremely fragile but definitely worth the risk.

Octavio Frias de Oliveira Bridge, Sao Paulo, Brazil

Opened in May of this year, the Octavio Frias de Oliveira Bridge is a stunning x-shaped cable-stayed bridge that crosses thePinheiros River in Sao Paulo. It's design is unique in that the 2 curved decks of the bridge cross each other through its x-shaped supporting tower, an illuminated structure that stands 450ft tall and has attached to it 144 steel cables.

Kintaikyo, Iwakuni, Japan

The original Kintai Bridge was built in 1673 and didn't stand very long until it was damaged due to flooding. It was then rebuilt and survived for more than 200 years until a typhoon battered it to death in 1950. The bridge that stands now over the Nishiki Riveris the 3rd build and looks magnificent, it's 5 wooden arches displaying an incredible amount of detail and craftmanship. Interesting fact: no nails or bolts have been used to build the arches, only clamps and wires.

Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge, Brasilia, Brazil

The JK Bridge in Brasilia is a lesson in elegant bridge design. The 3 huge arches diagonally hopping over the deck of the bridge give the structure an amazing visual fluidity and make the whole 1.2km bridge look effortlessly cool. Since being built the bridge has won awards for its design but is still massively underappreciated on a wider scale.

Rolling Bridge, London, UK

Thomas heatherwick' s award-winning rolling bridge is an ingenious addition to the grand union canal system in london and is unique in its design. Unlike regular movable canal bridges, the rolling bridge curls up on itself to form an octagon by way of hydraulics. It's an amazing sight and a reminder that a fresh perspective can produce great, innovative results, even when dealing with a structure as common as a bridge.

Beipanjiang River Railroad Bridge, Guizhou, China

Beipanjiang River Railroad Bridge in Guizhou is an enormous railway bridge that was built as part of the much larger 'Guizhou-Shuibai Railway Project'. Connecting 2 mountains over a deep ravine, at its highest point the bridge's deck sits 918ft above the ground (to compare, at its highest point the Millau viaduct's deck clears the river underneath by 890ft). The bridge has succeeded in connecting 2 of the country's poorest areas.

Henderson Waves, Southern Ridges, Singapore

'Henderson Waves' is Wingapore's highest pedestrian bridge and can be found at the southern ridges, a beautiful 9km stretch of gardens and parks which has frequently drawn comparisons to New York's Central Park. The bridge itself is absolutely stunning. The deck is made from thousands of Balau wood slats, perfectly cut and arranged, and along the length of the deck a huge snaking, undulating shell cleverly forms sheltered seating areas on every upward curve.

Pont Gustave Flaubert, Rouen, France

This is the incredible, brand new vertical lift bridge in Rouen, France, a beast of a structure whose 2 bridge spans weigh 1200tons each but can be hoisted 180ft vertically by the bridge's lifting mechanism in an impressive 12 minutes. Just the angular structures at the top of each tower weigh in at 450tons each, helping to support the lifting system as cruise ships sail through.

Hegigio Gorge Pipeline Bridge, Southern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea

Technically, this is a bridge: it's a structure which spans a gorge. The only difference is, the bridge can't be used by humans due to the fact that its purpose is to support 2 pipelines - 1 gas, 1 oil - across the extremely high gap in Papua New Guinea. So high in fact that if this were to be officially recognised as a bridge it would rocket to the top of the 'world's highest bridge-span' list at an impressive height of 1290ft. By comparison, the current highest bridge span belongs to the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado, hanging a mere 1053ft above ground level, while Manhattan's Chrysler Building measures 1047ft.

1. Bloodmasters:
This gorgeous 3D top-down action game was realease as open source last year after indie developer Pascal "CodeImp" vd Heiden found he'd lost motivation to continue with the project. It's a complete game with great graphics and needs a good C# developer to pick it up, port it to Mono, and help restore the community.
2. Project Citadel:
A very nice looking turn based strategy game set in World War II.
The game reached a playable state before it's development team ByteWare stopped playing the development game.
3. Windstille:
This project isn't technically dead - lead developer Grumbel occasionally bumps it with more concept work - but it's definitely in hibernation and progress is frustratingly slow.
Grumbel is actively seeking writers and developers so the prospects of reviving the project are quite good - no organizational work required.
4. Emilia Pinball:
Come on, who wouldn't love a great Free pinball game? Emilia Pinball is a fairly solid 3D pinball game that is playable, if a little "bare bones" in it's current form. A better table editor, some more tables, and a bit of love to the user interface and ball physics and this game would be a corker.
Hopefully one day a pinball wizard will resume improving this game and add another table or two as well as a few more features.
5. Labyrinth of Worlds:
Ultimate Underworld is my favourite ever game, and this is a project to create a new game based on it the 2nd instalment of the popular series. Since these days the world of Ultima is somewhat abandoned by it's foster parent company EA, I hoped projects like this and Underworld Adventures would have gained more support.
6. Boson:
The promising 3D RTS came a long way but never quite snowballed despite having nice graphics, original gameplay, and most of the hard work already done. I think the dependency on KDE libs was hurtful to attracting contributors.
It is original, playable, has a full set of units for two sides, nice graphics. It has everything going for it except momentum. Oh but to borrow a bit of enthusiasm from the Spring project, and Boson could spring back into life.
7. MyLink / MyNet:
MyLink is inspired by the rather cool game UpLink. After encountering difficulties the author started from scratch with the name MyNet, but after hitting difficulties again (with motivation this time) the project got abandoned. The author is waiting for a new maintainer to step up to the plate. Until that happens, consider this project disconnected.
8. Civil:
Civil is a cross-platform, turn-based, networked strategy game, which allows players to take part in scenarios set in historical battle theatres. The U.S. Civil war was the primary focus before they started losing the battle and development stopped in 2005. Written purely in Python/Pygame, there should be plenty of people able to help out.
9. Slickworm:
An innovative FPS where the terrain was deformable. It went through a few rewrites before the lead developer went silent. He was obviously talented and probably snapped up by a commercial company - a shame for the open source game community as it blows a big hole in the future for Slickworm; this potentially brilliant game looks like it'll never be more than a tech demo.
10. Battle for Antargis:
An original game that mixes elements of strategy and role play, this project enjoyed sustained development for several years and looked very promising before development tailed off as 2008 began. Hopefully somebody will pick things up again as this is one of those projects that counters the 'open source can only copy' popular criticism.
It had another original edge to it, it was probably the first significant Ruby game project, which probably doesn't help when it comes to attracting developers.
